Lips come in many shapes and sizes. Youthful lips are usually fuller and more plump and tend to lose volume and shape with age. Of course, even younger patients may want to enhance their naturally smaller lips to enjoy a fuller, more luscious lip appearance. Lip enhancement is commonly achieved with the use of cosmetic fillers such as Juvéderm or Restylane. These treatments offer a superb opportunity to achieve plumper, more defined, and softer lips, all with minimal downtime and discomfort. The Benefits of Lip Fillers

Cosmetic fillers are made of a product called hyaluronate, which is a naturally occurring gel that your skin already makes. The fillers used for lip enhancement come in various formulations of this gel depending on the patient’s goals. Some gels offer more hydration and softness, others more shape and sharper lip borders. Some are more conservative, others are more dramatic. The volume boost to your lips typically lasts for approximately 6-12 months, depending on your body’s metabolism. Sometimes lip fillers may be combined with smooth PDO threads as well for added volume and definition. Following lip augmentation, many of our patients experience a rejuvenated and more attractive look, characterized by fuller lips that contribute to facial balance.

The Maintenance of Lip Fillers

After your lip filler appointment, you may experience some swelling and occasionally some bruising. This resolves within a few days, and the results will last for several months. When filler treatments are repeated multiple times, some of the filler may migrate up the lip, and after a few sessions, the extra filler may need to be dissolved before more volume is added. Luckily, the hyaluronate fillers are easily dissolved with an injection of hyaluronidase enzyme that converts the displaced filler into water within 24 hours. This is a nice safety feature of fillers in the event of an undesirable outcome, lumps, or overzealous filler injection.

 

Other Lip Enhancements

Patients who do not want filler injection for whatever reason may also consider a natural lip enhancement using their blood-derived gel, called EZGel that is created at the time of their office visit with a simple blood draw and processing. Besides the EZGel, the patient’s tissues, dermis, fat cells, as well as stem cells may be used to enhance the lip volume. These are more involved but are also performed in an office setting with some local anesthesia. Finally, when patients have an elongated upper lip due to aging or genetics, a lip lift under local anesthesia is a great option to create subtle lip rejuvenation and a more youthful pout. This procedure has about a week of swelling but otherwise minimal downtime with permanent results.
