The American Osteopathic Board of Surgery Certificate

Plastic Surgeons undergo five years of rigorous General Surgery residency after medical school, followed by entering a highly competitive two- or three-year residency in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. This extensive seven-year surgical training is crucial to becoming a qualified Plastic Surgeon. Dr. Gorodisky has completed seven years of training, having finished residencies in both General Surgery and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Following his residencies, Dr. Gorodisky underwent extensive written, oral, and clinical certification testing, earning Board Certification in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery from the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery.

The field of Plastic Surgery is currently seeing an increase in practitioners who claim to be "Plastic Surgeons" without formal training in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Many of these individuals are motivated solely by financial gain, with little concern for patient well-being. While it is not illegal for non-Plastic Surgeons to perform cosmetic procedures, some self-proclaimed "Plastic Surgeons" have backgrounds in Dentistry, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Family Medicine, Dermatology, Internal Medicine, and have no training in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Many have attended brief weekend courses and lack formal training in Plastic Surgery. Dr. Gorodisky advises patients to request verification that their chosen Plastic Surgeon has completed a Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery residency or fellowship, the only two national medical education committees with approved training programs in this field: the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Dr. Gorodisky has completed an AOA approved training program in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and adheres to the stringent safety and practice guidelines set forth by the AOA and the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery.

When selecting a plastic surgeon, it is essential to ask for credentials or simply request to see their diploma verifying the completion of a Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery residency or fellowship. Ensure that the diploma explicitly states "Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery." You may be surprised to find that some "Plastic Surgeons" cannot provide this basic information. You deserve the best care, and you should not settle for anything less from your Plastic Surgeon.

What is a DO?

Doctors bearing the DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) designation are fully licensed physicians capable of performing surgeries and prescribing medications, with a holistic approach to medicine. The DO philosophy emphasizes treating the entire patient rather than focusing solely on symptoms. When applied to plastic surgery, this philosophy encompasses preventative health care, nutrition, and fostering a doctor-patient partnership geared toward achieving excellent health and beauty. Dr. Gorodisky is one of the few board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeons in the United States who is also a DO.
